Each one of my professors chose selections for us to read and discuss the first week, before we actually had stories to begin workshopping. I'm not sure it resonated as much then as it does now... Of course, if I had perhaps been a bit more mature to accept some of this advice, I may have benefitted more due to the amount of time I was given in college to write, choreograph, create, read, etc.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14741500678802314805noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2595023970326738297.post-88029038028303865082016-04-22T10:01:57.370-05:002016-04-22T10:01:57.370-05:00I appreciate your thoughts on this, because while ...I appreciate your thoughts on this, because while I think it's an invaluable inspiring and helpful book for a new writer (I use it when I teach creative writing), I did think it 'cheated' a little, with King not following his own advice at times. It almost seems like 2 books to me - one a memoir on writing and the other an editing book in the style of Elmor Leonard. Yours is a fair review. If nothing else - kill your darlings - is some of the best advice for writers taken from this book.Cara Sue Achterberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02700233615162786243noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2595023970326738297.post-62313798360311433072016-04-01T20:51:31.157-05:002016-04-01T20:51:31.157-05:00I've had quite a few students read it and enjo...I've had quite a few students read it and enjoy also. I've been so behind in life, which puts me behind in blogging then. Oh well. It is what it is.

I was just given Me Before You, but it's been put to the back of my pile. As for Why Not Me, I really had some issues with it as opposed to her first novel. In the first one, I felt a connection with her as a person--maybe because a good section was from her childhood and before she was famous, with just some celebrity woven into it. In Why Not Me, I really felt separated from her as she talked about some of the glamorous things she got to do/liked to do. They were just not things I have any connection to and not something I'm interested in reading about others doing. I know some people enjoy reading about it, but I liked her first book about growing up and becoming who she is. Easier to relate to.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14741500678802314805noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2595023970326738297.post-37661968441765915592016-03-06T12:53:47.828-06:002016-03-06T12:53:47.828-06:00Yes! I also liked that it wasn't JUST a book ...Yes! I also liked that it wasn't JUST a book on how to right or JUST a memoir. Both of those are fine, but I really enjoyed having the two woven together. I also really like to feel like I'm friends with an author. This made me think that he and are buddies already. If I ran into the street we could stop and have a conversation and he'd know who I am. I did read "Why Not Me" during a trip last week. It had a great message but I always feel as if she's holding back somehow. I don't know if it's because a book isn't her strongest medium or what. I imagine if she was telling me the same stories in person it would have a stronger punch.

I'm about a third of the way through "Me Before You".
